ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has sentenced a motorist on charges of intentional endangerment after he was found driving recklessly, including swerving multiple times in a manner that endangered his own life and threatened the safety of others.

The court sentenced the motorist to six months in jail, and imposed a fine of Dh50,000 for the offence. In addition, it ordered him to pay Dh20,000, reflecting the assessed value of the vehicle used in the misdemeanour, as it was proven to belong to another person, bringing the total amount imposed to Dh70,000.

The court also ordered a one-year suspension of the motorist's driving licence, to be implemented following the completion of the jail term.

The Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution had referred the defendant to the court immediately after the police had finalised his arrest for reckless conduct on a public road.

In reaching its guilty verdict, the court relied on the evidence and proof contained in the case file, including police reports and investigation records, as well as technical reports and evidence derived from surveillance camera footage documenting the defendant’s commission of the offence.

Following the judgment, the Public Prosecution urged motorists to comply with traffic laws and regulations, and to act responsibly in order to ensure the safety of all road users. It added that reckless driving and other dangerous practices constitute hazardous behaviour that exposes offenders to legal accountability and stringent penalties under UAE traffic law.
