ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

Air India is set to launch direct flights from Guwahati, the capital of the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, to Abu Dhabi and Dubai from August 4.

The announcement was made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X.

“With these non-stop services, Guwahati Airport is now connected to four countries — the UAE, Thailand, Singapore and Bhutan,” the chief minister said.

Expatriates in the UAE who hail from Assam have long had to take multiple flights to reach their home state, as there was no direct air connection.

Sarma said Assam is poised to emerge as a hub for tourism and business. He said EU states have revised their travel advisories and removed restrictive guidance for their citizens visiting the state. Recently, Australia and Japan also lifted their travel advisories.

“This timely development, following the recent visit of EU diplomats, is a strong vote of confidence in Assam and bodes well for deeper EU–Assam engagement,” he said.

The chief minister said his next goal is to facilitate the launch of direct services between Guwahati and Vietnam.
