ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)

SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has disclosed the successful provision of advanced LASER Stone Surgery (LASER Lithotripsy) for paediatric patients in Abu Dhabi, a life-saving procedure now available under the supervision of Dr Hamid Reza Toussi, Consultant Urological Surgeon at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).

The announcement follows the recent case of a nine-month-old baby who presented with multiple kidney stones caused by a rare genetic abnormality known as Cystinuria, which also affects his two-year-old brother. After undergoing emergency stent insertion at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City to relieve a kidney blockage, the child received several sessions of LASER Ablation under the care of Dr Toussi to clear stones from the ureters and both kidneys.

At present, Dr Toussi is the only surgeon in Abu Dhabi performing LASER Lithotripsy procedures in children, with referrals received from hospitals across the emirate, including SEHA Tawam Hospital, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, Burjeel Hospital, and NMC Hospital. His expertise highlights SEHA’s unique capacity to provide specialised and advanced surgical care for children with renal and bladder stones.

Commenting on the event, Dr Hamid Reza Toussi, Consultant Urological Surgeon at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, said, “LASER Stone Surgery is a critical intervention for paediatric patients with kidney stones. By offering this procedure, we aim to provide comprehensive care and long-term support to children and their families.”

Children diagnosed with renal or bladder stones are especially predisposed to recurrence and longer-term complications such as renal impairment. To address these concerns, Dr Toussi ensures that patients are seen by paediatric nephrologists for ongoing evaluation, monitoring of renal function, and post-operative follow-up. Collaboration between surgeons and nephrologists is essential to treating paediatric kidney stone disease holistically.

The introduction of LASER Stone Surgery in Abu Dhabi is another progressive step towards a safer, more effective, child-centred treatment approach, and demonstrates SEHA’s ongoing commitment to leading medical innovation and raising awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention, and comprehensive post-operative care for children with complex kidney disease.
