The welfare of every individual has been at the heart of the UAE since its founding, with human rights enshrined in its laws. This commitment to upholding human dignity extends worldwide, as reflected in the work of the nation’s Permanent Committee for Human Rights (PCHR) and its active representation in global bodies such as the United Nations.

On December 10, the PCHR marked the anniversary of a historic global pledge, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In a post on X, the committee emphasised the significance of the declaration: “This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. This year’s theme is "Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials", highlighting that the principles of the Universal Declaration are woven into the routines and protections we rely on every day.”

Jamal Al Musharakh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations Office and Other International Organisations in Geneva, spoke of the values underpinning the country’s dedication to human rights.

In a post on Instagram, Al Musharakh said: “On Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to upholding human dignity and advancing equality and justice for all. This commitment is rooted in building societies where tolerance, coexistence, and respect are not ideals, but everyday realities.”

He stressed that “human rights are not abstract principles; they are essential foundations for the wellbeing and future of our communities”.

Dr. Mouza Al Shehhi, Director of the UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC, also underscored human rights as daily pillars of dignity, particularly in the context of challenges faced by women worldwide.

In a post in Arabic on X, Dr. Al Shehhi said upholding human dignity in everyday life becomes especially vital for women “who are directly affected by the erosion of fundamental rights in food, housing, health, and education”.

“Protecting women's rights is essential to ensuring the dignity of every human being and the stability of any society,” she said.
