The Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) has intensified its efforts to promote early detection and preventive care through its flagship initiative, Pink Caravan, in October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The UAE-based organisation continues to provide free screenings, educational workshops, and nationwide outreach to reduce the impact of breast cancer.

Speaking to Aletihad, Rashid Al Ameeri, Head of Corporate Communications at FOCP, highlighted the importance of early detection in saving lives.

"Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and early diagnosis is crucial. Through Pink Caravan, we ensure that communities across the UAE have access to free screenings and accurate information," Al Ameeri said.

A National Campaign with Proven Impact

Since its launch in 2011, Pink Caravan – a pan UAE breast cancer initiative – has become a cornerstone of breast cancer awareness in the UAE. According to global statistics, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, and 670,000 died from the disease. Locally, breast cancer accounts for 21.4% of all cancer cases, with over 1,000 new diagnoses reported last year.

"Early detection can raise the five-year survival rate to 99% for localised cases. Yet late diagnoses remain a challenge, often due to delayed screenings or limited awareness," Al Ameeri noted.

Programmes and Community Outreach

Throughout October, FOCP operates fixed and mobile clinics across more than 86 locations nationwide, providing clinical breast exams, mammograms, and ultrasounds. Educational workshops teach participants how to perform breast self-examinations, while digital resources and brochures support ongoing awareness.

Corporate engagement is also a priority. The Corporate Wellness Days programme brings Mini Mobile Clinics to workplaces, offering screenings and educational sessions. Large-scale public events, such as the Aljada Festival, combine screenings with family activities, workshops, and fitness challenges to reach all age groups.

"Our goal is to engage women, men, youth, and corporate partners alike, making breast health awareness accessible to everyone," Al Ameeri said.

Strong Partnerships for Greater Reach

FOCP collaborates with government agencies, healthcare providers, NGOs, and corporate sponsors to maximise impact. Partnerships provide venues, staff, equipment, and funding for clinics and public awareness events. Notable collaborations include the Battle Cancer Challenge at The Seven Stadium in Dubai and Ride with Rixos in Abu Dhabi.

Thousands of screenings are conducted every year, and over 150 companies have participated in Corporate Wellness Days – a number that has doubled since 2023. The Pink Shop, selling merchandise to support cancer patients, encourages community involvement and funding for underprivileged women.

"Reaching communities with accurate information was challenging at first. Today, thanks to consistent outreach and government support, these barriers have greatly reduced," Al Ameeri said.

Looking forward, FOCP aims to expand fixed clinic networks, particularly in underserved areas, and strengthen partnerships to maintain year-round awareness. The organisation encourages volunteers, corporate teams, and individuals to support Pink Caravan by attending screenings, hosting clinics, purchasing merchandise, or donating directly via focp.ae.

"Every person and organisation can contribute to a health-conscious society where early detection saves lives," Al Ameeri said.
