DUBAI (ALETIHAD)

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) honoured the entities participating in the Aviation Safety Marathon Challenge, an initiative launched by the GCAA two years ago aimed at highlighting best practices in aviation safety in the UAE. The challenge seeks to foster a spirit of positive competition in the aviation sector and promote more sustainable practices in the country.

The awards ceremony took place on the sidelines of the "UAE Aviation Safety Conference 2024", organised by the GCAA in Dubai over two days. The event witnessed significant participation from government entities, airlines, and academic and research institutions related to the aviation sector.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, stated that the GCAA is keen to adopt all initiatives that stimulate a supportive environment for innovation, sustainability, and excellence within the civil aviation community in the UAE. The "Aviation Safety Marathon" Challenge embodies this approach by recognising entities committed to adopting and supporting responsible and sustainable practices, aligning with the authority’s goals and supporting the national strategies and the UAE's future vision.

The challenge includes three award categories. The first is the "Green Airport Award", which aims to develop environmentally responsible and sustainable airport infrastructure. Dubai Airports won this award in recognition of its exceptional commitment to reducing its environmental impact and promoting a greener future for aviation.

The second category is the "Green Air Navigation Service Provider Award", which honours air navigation service providers that have made significant achievements in integrating sustainable practices into their operations. Global Air Navigation Services won this award for its efforts to reduce emissions, optimise flight paths, and contribute to clearer sky.

The third and final category is the "Green Airline Award," which recognises airlines that have made significant progress in reducing their environmental footprint and promoting sustainable air travel. Etihad Airways won this award in recognition of its commitment to fuel efficiency, waste reduction, and providing innovative solutions for a more sustainable aviation sector.

The GCAA also honoured both Sharjah International Airport and Fujairah International Airport for their exceptional commitment to developing their infrastructure under the "Building Better Airports" initiative. This effort supports national efforts to enhance civil aviation infrastructure and promote sustainability practices, contributing to a greener and more environmentally friendly vision for airports.
