SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)

At just 13 years old, Ghaya Alahbabi, also known as "Green Ghaya", is making a significant impact as a young advocate for environmental causes in the UAE and beyond.

Her passion and dedication have earned her the title of the youngest ambassador for the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi and the youngest UNICEF Youth Advocate for COP28.

Alahbabi's path has brought her to influential global stages, like the United Nations in Geneva, where she acted as a representative for the UAE.

She also serves as the youngest sustainability ambassador for Masdar’s Y4S initiative, advocating for sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

Notably, Alahbabi made her mark as the youngest speaker at the World Festival of Youth 2024, the world's largest youth festival, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with Aletihad, Alahbabi shared her thoughts on what inspired her to take climate action.

"Inspiration is a powerful force that compels individuals to take action, pursue their passions, and make meaningful contributions," she said.

"God has given us the opportunity to inhabit this earth, and it is our responsibility to leave a positive mark and make a difference," she added.

Alahbabi also spoke about the profound influence of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whom she regards as an inspiring environmental leader. His legacy, she believes, laid a strong foundation for championing environmental causes in the UAE and abroad.

Balancing her school life at Liwa International School for Girls with environmental advocacy, Alahbabi said that time management and organisation allow her to weave her passions into her daily routine.

She highlighted the importance of optimism, focus, and persistence in overcoming challenges, such as scepticism, in order to make a positive impact on the world.

Reflecting on her role as UNICEF's youngest ambassador at COP28, Alahbabi noted the experience was both inspiring and impactful.

"Serving as UNICEF's youngest ambassador at COP28 was both an inspiring and impactful experience. My primary goal was to elevate the voices of young people and emphasise the urgent need for climate action that takes future generations into account. I focused on drawing attention to the profound effects of climate change on children and youth, advocating for policies that prioritise their rights and safety in climate discussions."

During COP28, she engaged with global leaders, participated in panel discussions, and pushed for ambitious climate targets, all the while incorporating the viewpoints of young people into the decision-making process.

Alahbabi emphasised the key influence her family exerts in supporting her activism journey, providing both emotional and practical assistance. Their involvement has boosted her confidence and strengthened their collective effort to make a meaningful impact.

She also leads the "Green Buds Community Team", an environmental project in the UAE directed at raising awareness among young people and contributing to the country’s sustainability goals for 2030. The team, consisting of 45-50 members from across the UAE, is resolute in achieving an eco-friendlier future.

Alahbabi underscored the crucial role youth play in shaping climate policy and action in the UAE. "Looking ahead, I see the UAE continuing to lead by example, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental stewardship. Youth will play a pivotal role in realising this vision, channelling their creativity and determination to drive progress towards a more sustainable and resilient future," she added.

She advises young people starting environmental projects to "start small but think big”.

Begin with achievable goals while keeping your larger ambitions in mind. Educate yourself thoroughly about the issues you are addressing, as this knowledge will be crucial in guiding your efforts effectively. Building a network of like-minded individuals and organisations is also essential, as it can provide support and amplify your impact," she said.

Persistence and determination, she believes, are paramount for overcoming challenges and achieving success.
