MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)
In an era where technology and environmental stewardship converge, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is leading the charge with innovative mobile applications designed to engage the local community in environmental conservation.
SAHIM: Empowering Citizen Science
In 2023, EAD, in collaboration with Emirates Nature – WWF, introduced the SAHIM app, marking a first in citizen science initiatives within the UAE.
According to EAD, the name "SAHIM", meaning "contribute" in Arabic, aptly reflects the app's purpose as it invites residents to play an active role in environmental research.
The SAHIM app is part of the broader SAHIM Citizen Science Programme, aimed at fostering a new era of public participation in environmental science, which will help support environmental conservation research, decision-making, and the development of policies and regulations.
Through this comprehensive UAE-wide programme, users can document and report single-use plastics and waste found in both marine and terrestrial environments.
Available on the Apple Store and Google Play, SAHIM enables users of all ages to contribute to real-world conservation efforts.
The data collected by users is sent directly to EAD, providing detailed insights to expert researchers and policy makers.
This real-time information helps EAD craft informed policies, make strategic decisions, and develop effective regulations to combat waste.
BAADR: Rewarding Green Actions
In 2022, EAD launched BAADR, a unique smartphone application designed to incentivise environmentally friendly behaviours.
Available for free on major platforms including Apple Store, Android, and Huawei, BAADR is the UAE's first app to offer rewards for environmental actions.
The app "BAADR", which translates to "initiate" in Arabic, seeks to reduce carbon emissions and the use of single-use items while promoting recycling, reusing, and participation in environmental events.
Developed in partnership with CME, a multinational technology firm, BAADR rewards users with points for completing various eco-friendly tasks.
These points can be redeemed at a range of partnered vendors across Abu Dhabi, offering tangible benefits for those who engage in sustainable practices.
The app also serves as an instrumental role in raising environmental awareness.
Its integration with EAD's educational outreach initiatives aims to involve students and youth in environmental conservation efforts.
With over 2,739 users already engaged, BAADR is making strides in promoting sustainable living and supporting Abu Dhabi's vision for a greener future.
Abu Dhabi Nature Species App: Exploring Biodiversity
For nature enthusiasts, the Abu Dhabi Nature Species App offers an immersive experience through the emirate's diverse ecosystems.
This free app provides comprehensive information on over 4,000 species, including birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, and plants found in Abu Dhabi.
The app features detailed descriptions on a wide range of species, their habitats, and past sighting locations, alongside captivating multimedia content.
It also incorporates a "Citizen Science" feature, empowering users to contribute to scientific discovery through submitting photographs and videos of wildlife encounters, along with GPS location data that can inform EAD's team of experts and extensive database.
Moreover, the app includes interactive elements such as quizzes and a public forum for users to share experiences.
The "Ask an Expert" section offers direct access to EAD scientists for inquiries about the emirate's natural world.
This app also supports sustainable interactions with nature through highlighting its protected areas and promoting eco-tourism.
