The Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) Global Conference 2024 kicked off in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Office of Development and Martyrs' Families Affairs at the Presidential Court and Chairman of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council. Held under the theme “One Asia, One Future”, the event brings together more than 1,500 investors, philanthropists, researchers, policymakers, and other professionals to tackle critical social and environmental issues.
In his keynote address, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, emphasised the importance of collective resolve in the region to address pressing issues, with a focus on women and youth empowerment, climate change, and renewable energy.
“The theme of this conference, ‘One Asia, One Future’, reflects a clear determination throughout the continent to promote growth and development, to create viable regional markets, to share in successful initiatives, and to encourage cooperation at all levels.
“When we speak of One Asia, we emphasise a strong belief that we must think and work together as a family of equals, with the most prosperous aiding those who are in need. We all must continue to be a source of optimism in Asia and in the world,” he said, noting his confidence in the power of collective action and innovation to drive positive change across the continent.
In her address, Naina Subberwal Batra, CEO of AVPN, commended Abu Dhabi's rich tradition of philanthropy, deeply rooted in its cultures and religious heritage. She further echoed the sentiments of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, emphasising the transformative potential of philanthropy and social investment in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for Asia.
Batra further highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared values in driving meaningful impact across diverse communities.
“Asian Philanthropy is not merely a transactional act of giving. It is a powerful force for positive change. It is deeply rooted in our shared values of compassion, of empathy, and of community. It encompasses a wide variety of activities, from traditional charitable donations to innovative social investments, which are aimed at addressing the most pressing issues that face our region today,” she said.
"In today's rapidly changing world," Batra continued, "the importance of philanthropy and social investment cannot be overstated." She referenced a UNESCO report on SDGs in the Asia Pacific region, expressing concern that the region will not meet any of the SDG goals by 2030. In this regard, Batra highlighted the significance of convening to address pressing issues, emphasising the shared goal of forging a future where prosperity and well-being are accessible to all in Asia.
This year marks the first time that AVPN is hosting its global conference in West Asia, according to Batra. She noted the significant geopolitical position of the region, which serves as a bridge between Asia, Africa, and Europe.
The conference will feature discussions on topics ranging from impact investing and blended finance to climate and health initiatives. Participants will have the opportunity to explore innovative solutions, share best practices, and forge partnerships to address the region's most pressing challenges.
As the largest social investment conference in Asia, the AVPN Global Conference 2024 promises to be a catalyst for action, inspiring leaders to work together towards a brighter tomorrow for future generations.
