TALAH TURK (ABU DHABI)

Nestled within the vibrant atmosphere of Al Hosn Festival, Mariam Ali Al Tunaiji's booth proudly showcases the first-ever "Al Ghaf chocolate" in the world, produced through her brand, Barir. This venture not only pays homage to the UAE's rich heritage but also serves as a tribute to the UAE's visionary Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Early Days

Barir started as a university graduation project, with Al Tunaiji choosing the Ghaf tree as the brand's central symbol, as it is "known to be the closest to Sheikh Zayed's heart," she said.

Facing the challenge of incorporating the bitter taste of Ghaf leaves into chocolate, Al Tunaiji successfully crafted seven distinct flavours, five of which prominently feature Ghaf. The flavours include Plain Ghaf, Pistachio Ghaf, Caramel Ghaf, Peanut Ghaf, and Hazelnut Cream Ghaf. Additionally, the brand offers Biscuit and Almond Cream variations without Ghaf, catering to both adventurous and traditional palates.

All chocolates are made with locally sourced ingredients, and, as a graphic designer, Al Tunaiji took it upon herself to design the branding and packaging herself, with the Ghaf tree serving as the business's logo.

Why Al Ghaf Tree?

Explaining its cultural significance, Al-Barir states: "In the heart of Emirati culture, the Al Ghaf tree stands as a profound symbol of heritage, woven into the fabric of our identity. Its robust presence mirrors the unwavering strength and determination that defines the spirit of our people. Just as the Ghaf tree thrives in the arid desert, resilient against adversities, it reflects the enduring resilience embedded in our cultural narrative. Embracing the Al Ghaf tree at "Barir" is more than a choice; it's a homage to the deep-rooted values that make us who we are-a celebration of heritage, strength, and the timeless spirit of the UAE."

Highlighting the importance of the Ghaf tree, Al Tunaiji echoed Sheikh Zayed's sentiments on the significance of the tree in the UAE's harsh terrain, emphasising their ability to grow with minimal human intervention, with the help of rain and other natural resources. The resilient Ghaf tree is a symbol of endurance and sustainability, embodying the nation's heritage.

Health Benefits

Beyond its cultural symbolism, the Ghaf tree boasts health benefits, containing essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and sulphur.

"Our elders used to eat Al Ghaf, sit in its shade, and use it for medicinal purposes," she said, adding that she intends to transform Barir into a global brand.

Inspiration Behind the Name

Barir, aptly named after the hills in the UAE deserts crowned by the Ghaf tree, is not just a chocolate brand, but a celebration of heritage, strength, and the timeless spirit of the UAE. Through her business, Al Tunaiji invites the world to savour the unique flavours and cultural significance encapsulated in every piece of Al Ghaf chocolate.

In the dynamic local market that empowers men and women alike, Al Tunaiji serves as living proof of the capability, creativity, and resilience inherent in Emirati women. Her presence exemplifies the thriving spirit of female entrepreneurship, contributing to the ongoing success and empowerment of women in the region.
