A burglar with an apparent sugar deficit broke into a café in Germany, but instead of raiding the cash register, the thief took a cake and two packs of ice cream, local police reported on Sunday.

The burglary occurred at 2:30 am (0030 GMT) on Saturday directly by the spa park in the town of Bad Salzuflen, in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Investigators are now looking for the perpetrator and are puzzling over his motive.

"We still do not know whether he deliberately had his sights set on the sweet loot or whether he was seized by a bit of hunger during the crime," a police spokesman said.
