US President Donald Trump said he has agreed to a ceasefire with Iran for a period of two weeks.

Trump said on Wednesday just before 3am (Gulf time) that following mediation talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, he would agree to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks”, subject to Iran’s “complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said almost all of the points of a proposed 10-point truce plan have been agreed on by the US and Iran, who have been at war since the US and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint strike on Tehran on February 28.

“This will be a double-sided ceasefire. The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive agreement concerning long-term with Iran, and peace in the Middle East,” Trump wrote.

He added that the two-week period would allow the agreement to be “finalised and consummated”.

Iran has confirmed the two-week pause announced by Trump, the Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported.

The ceasefire came just over an hour before Trump’s deadline for an offensive in which he ominously warned that “a whole civilisation will die”.
