An Indian passenger bus with at least 40 people onboard plunged into a river in Nepal's Tanahun district early on Friday, a spokesperson for Nepal's Armed Police Force said.

Asian News International (ANI) quoted Kumar Neupane, a spokesperson for the Armed Police Force in Nepal, as saying that 14 bodies have been retrieved from the river.

Deepkumar Raya, a senior police officer, told ANI on phone that the bus involed in the accident, bearing a number plate of the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is lying on the bank of the river. The bus was on its way to Kathmandu from Pokhara when the mishap took place, he added.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh government is sending a senior official to Nepal to find out if anyone from the state was on the bus. Further details about the accident are still awaited.
