Emirati women's creativity takes the spotlight at Qasr Al Hosn as the two-day "Under the Shade" initiative opens today, August 28.
Marking Emirati Women's Day, the programme brings together heritage, contemporary design and entrepreneurship, celebrating women's contributions to culture, leadership and community.
Talks and cultural activities are lined up through August 29, , and the women-led showcases are a must-see for visitors.
Three furniture pieces from the House of Artisans Design Competition show how Emirati traditions inform contemporary design, drawing on Sadu weaving, drum-making, majlis gatherings and Abu Dhabi landmarks.
Brands led by Emirati women are also on show, spanning jewellery, perfume, homeware and design.
Entrepreneur Noor Al Binali said she is proud to take part with her brand, Fae Fine Jewelry, crediting her success to the growing opportunities available to Emirati women.
"Across generations, Emirati women have thrived under the support of leadership," she told Aletihad. "From policy changes supporting our education rights to today's empowering initiatives, Emirati women have been positioned as businesswomen, in STEM, and as what's now called a 'generation shaper'."
Wijdan Abdulla, Founder of MADD, said one of the most transformative shifts for Emirati women has been the growing freedom to pursue different paths, supported by both the country and their families.
"We see Emirati women in so many different fields — starting businesses, creating, leading, and building things," she said.
She encouraged young Emirati women to pursue their ideas without waiting for the perfect moment. "If you want to try something different, try it. You're allowed to change your mind, make mistakes, and find your own way."
