RAJEEV CHERIAN (JEBEL JAIS)
Miles-long rocky cliffs appear to stand watch as winding roads led to the mountain top. Rising 1,934 metres above sea level, Jebel Jais, in Ras Al Khaimah, is the highest peak in the UAE.
Part of the northern Hajar mountains, Jebel Jais, some 290km from Abu Dhabi, is a preferred destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure-seekers alike.
As the mountain trip proceeds, travellers are met with stop points with shops selling coffee and refreshments. Motorists also have to keep watch for goats that roam freely across the mountain roads.
The nearly 30km road meanders through rugged terrain, offering stunning views of valleys and rocky landscapes. At the top, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramas from the viewing deck, with binoculars offering sweeping views.
According to the Jabel Jais Ras Al Khaimah website, researchers believe the mountain was formed millions of years ago from geological activity.
Jebel Jais, part of the Hajar Mountain Range stretching 700km from Ras Al Khaimah to Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, is defined by rugged peaks and eroded cliffs. Its terrain is dominated by Ophiolite rocks, created by submarine volcanoes.
Across the mountain, more than 320 plant species have been recorded, according to the website.
Although the mountain is most popular after summer, many still make the journey on weekends year-round. After the viewing deck, adventure opportunities are aplenty in the area.
Notable among them is Jas Flight, the world’s longest zipline, stretching 2.83km at a height of 1,680 metres above sea level, soaring over mountains and valleys.
A slew of other activities will be in full swing after summer, and the location is also a favoured destination for cycling, camping and hiking enthusiasts.
