Renowned pianist Lang Lang has lauded Abu Dhabi’s commitment to cultural and artistic growth, describing the city as a place where global artists feel “welcomed and inspired”.
Ahead of his highly anticipated performance at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island on November 22, Lang Lang shared his admiration for Abu Dhabi’s evolving music ecosystem and its dedication to fostering global talent in an exclusive interview with Aletihad.
“Abu Dhabi has an incredible vision for cultural and artistic growth,” he said.
Lang Lang’s upcoming concert, Lang Lang Plays Disney, promises to blend classical music with beloved melodies from Disney classics such as Frozen, The Jungle Book, and Mary Poppins. Accompanied by a full orchestra, the performance reimagines these iconic soundtracks, offering a fresh perspective on familiar childhood tunes.
“It is like rediscovering an old friend in a surprising new way.”
He hopes the performance’s unconventional approach will complement Abu Dhabi’s growing cultural identity by bridging the gap between classical music and more modern tunes.
“I hope my performance can contribute to Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a global cultural hub. By blending the classical world with Disney’s beloved melodies, this concert introduces audiences to the magic of orchestral music in a new and accessible way. It is about creating moments where people, young and old, connect with music on a deeply emotional level,” he said.
Lang Lang believes that blending timeless melodies with classical artistry offers a fresh perspective that can inspire young musicians, and he praised Abu Dhabi for providing a platform that encourages creativity and broadens the horizons of musical expression.
"Young musicians need inspiration, and events like this are a spark. By experiencing how Disney’s iconic melodies can transform into classical pieces, they see the endless possibilities within music. Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering such opportunities is a gift to the next generation of artists," the musician explained.
Sharing his thoughts on the role of music in Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision, Lang Lang said the city successfully balances its heritage with modernity.
“Abu Dhabi’s cultural vision is about blending heritage with modernity, and this event perfectly encapsulates that. It respects the global appeal of Disney while elevating it through classical interpretations, which align beautifully with the city’s rich and diverse cultural landscape," he said, adding that this approach showcases Abu Dhabi’s commitment to celebrating diversity.
“It invites people from all walks of life to experience something magical together.”
Lang Lang described Abu Dhabi as a “dream destination for artists,” praising its world-class venues like the Etihad Arena, supportive cultural vibe, and welcoming audience. With ongoing investment in music education, global collaborations, and unique performances, he added, Abu Dhabi is set to draw even more talent from around the world.
“It is clear that Abu Dhabi values the universal language of music,” he said.
