Promoting Public Understanding
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research and Advisory, explained the main objective of launching a new collection of original and unique books at the Sharjah International Book Fair is to enhance public understanding of complex issues, regionally and the internationally. The aim is also to actively contribute to promoting intellectual dialogue and providing innovative, unconventional analyses of current events and their future trends.
Dr. Al-Ali said: “TRENDS attaches great importance to intellectuals, experts, researchers, and authors as part of its global strategy and vision, because of their effective role in addressing contemporary issues and crises with meaningful and rigorous methods that are based on robust scientific research and accurate data. Moreover, they play a constructive role in fostering a discussion-friendly environment that enables the exchange of different ideas and views on the topics addressed by their publications.”
Zero Government Bureaucracy
Dr. Abdullah bin Salman Al-Nuaimi kicked off the book-signing ceremonies by signing his book, “Zero Government Bureaucracy: General Characteristics, Technological Transformations, and the UAE Model”, published by TRENDS. In this book, the author analyses the concept of “zero bureaucracy,” explaining it as an approach aimed at eliminating administrative barriers that hinder productivity and innovation, while increasing efficiency in the delivery of government services.
The book seeks to present a comprehensive analysis of bureaucracy and its various impacts on institutional performance, with a particular focus on government institutions, which are more susceptible to bureaucratic complexities due to the legislation and regulations governing their work. It also explores effective solutions that help reduce these complexities and achieve what is known as “zero bureaucracy.”
The book highlights the UAE’s experience as a pioneering model in zeroing bureaucracy through adoption of smart government and digital transformation. The UAE has successfully overcome traditional bureaucratic obstacles by developing integrated systems that rely on smart technology, which helps in accelerating processes and delivering high-quality services, and contribute to achieving well-being and enhancing the quality of life in society.
China-India Relations
Shamma Al-Qutbah, a researcher at TRENDS, signed her English-language book titled “From Rivalry to Diplomatic Engagement in the Asia pacific: Evolving Geopolitics of the China and India Relationship”. The book examines the complex and evolving relationship between China and India, two rising powers whose strategic interactions reshape the geopolitical landscape of Eurasia.
The book explains the main dimensions of this rivalry, including border disputes, economic competition, and military postures. The analysis also focuses on the recent agreement reached by the two sides, which constitutes a significant diplomatic achievement that may pave the way for de-escalation after years of increasing tensions.
The book concludes that while the agreement between India and China to resolve their border dispute provides an opportunity for constructive dialogue, lasting peace between the two countries is conditional on their ability to manage their competition carefully and build true, fruitful cooperation. Striking a balance between competition and cooperation will be crucial in shaping the future of their relationship and will have wider impacts on the international order in the years to come.
China’s Expanding Footprint in the Middle East
Najla Al Midfa, a researcher at TRENDS, launched her English-language book titled “China’s Expanding Footprint in the MENA Region: Strategic Interests, Diplomatic Strategies, and Regional Impacts”. The book explores China’s efforts, as a global power, to intensify its interactions with countries in the Middle East and North Africa over the past decade, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative. By adopting a non-interference approach, China has successfully built partnerships that attract countries in the region seeking to diversify their economies while maintaining their sovereignty.
The book notes that China’s presence in the region serves not only its goals of securing energy resources and enhancing its global influence but also to shape the regional balance of power, especially in the context of Western actors. The book offers policy recommendations for decision-makers in the Middle East and North Africa to implement strategies that maximise economic gains, protect critical sectors, and maintain balanced relationships with global powers in order to ensure sustainable development and independence.
The Muslim Brotherhood and International Relations
Hamad Al-Hosani, Researcher and Head of the Political Islam Studies Department at TRENDS, along with Abdullah Al-Khaja, Researcher at TRENDS, signed the thirteenth volume of the TRENDS Encyclopaedia on the Muslim Brotherhood, titled “The Muslim Brotherhood in International Relations: Role and Consequences.” The book aims to provide a historical account of key turning points where the Muslim Brotherhood’s approach and path in international relations have changed. It explores the contrast between the group’s theorisation constancy and its pragmatic, operational activism.
The book shows the similarities and differences between the Muslim Brotherhood and other extremist groups in their perspectives on international relations. It also examines the extent of infiltration of the International Organisation of Muslim Brotherhood in the Western World and the impact of that on the global political scene. Furthermore, it offers insights into the future path of the Muslim Brotherhood in international relations.
