Matilda the Musical is based on the 1988 children’s novel by Roald Dahl. The musical was adapted by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. It was first developed by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, in 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in 2011. The show was a critical and commercial success, leading to productions all over the world including Broadway in New York City, where it opened in 2013.

The musical is the story of a young girl named Matilda Wormwood, who is extraordinarily intelligent and loves reading. Despite being neglected and mistreated by her crass and ignorant parents, she finds solace in books and develops telekinetic powers. Matilda’s life changes when she starts school and meets the kind-hearted Miss Honey, who recognises her talents. However, the school’s tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, is a formidable obstacle to Matilda’s happiness. The story follows Matilda’s journey as she uses her wit and abilities to stand up to her parents and Miss Trunchbull, changing her own destiny and that of those around her. It’s a tale of empowerment, resilience, and the transformative power of education and kindness.

The musical has won over 101 international awards, including multiple Olivier Awards and Tony Awards.
