Retailers across the UAE are reporting a sharp increase in demand for camping equipment as the country welcomes the return of cooler weather. With the start of the winter season, both residents and tourists are heading outdoors for mountain retreats and desert escapes, turning camping into one of the season’s most popular activities.

Store owners say sales of tents, portable stoves, and lighting gear have risen sharply this year compared to previous seasons, driven by the growing popularity of eco-tourism and outdoor adventure, as well as social media trends.

"Since the start of November, we've seen at least a 40% increase in customers," Mohammed, an employee at Alhor Camping & Hunting Tools, told Aletihad.

He said that families are now increasingly buying complete camping kits, including portable refrigerators and cooking equipment, adding that this corresponds to a broader pattern of investing in higher-quality gear for long-term use.

Retailers say customers are becoming more discerning and well-informed about the products they want. Al-Megnaus Hypermarket reported growing interest in sustainable and user-friendly equipment.

"People come in asking for eco-friendly materials, windproof tents, and solar-powered lanterns," Kawthar, a store assistant, told Aletihad.

"Easy-to-assemble gear is also in high demand; many families prefer quick-assembly tents and compact furniture that fits into their SUVs."

She added that, in response, stores are expanding their inventory beyond basic items to include high-tech gadgets such as GPS trackers, portable power banks, and smart lighting systems - products that appeal to both beginners and seasoned campers.

Online sales have also witnessed a major boost, with many stores offering same-day delivery to meet demand.

“A lot of people prefer browsing online before visiting the shop,” Kawthar said.

“They check reviews and compare prices, but still come in to inspect the equipment before buying.”

Both Mohammed and Kawthar agree that the growing interest in outdoor gear points to a broader lifestyle change - once a weekend escape, the UAE’s diverse landscapes have now become a regular part of how many residents experience winter.

With the season expected to last until early March, the UAE government is also rolling out campaigns encouraging residents to explore the country’s natural environment in a responsible and sustainable way.
